Wrestling at St. Vincent’s [added 11/28/2012]
You are invited to participate on the St. Vincent Wrestling Team! We welcome all interested athletes in grades 5 – 8 from St. Charles, St. Jude, Queen of Angels, Most Precious Blood, and other schools feeding into Bishop Dwenger. Our goal is to build one, united team that can develop athletes who make an immediate contribution to the BD wrestling team. The St. Vincent program has proven to be successful and has an organized season of practices and dual meets during the months of January – March. We feel this will be a very exciting year for all of us.
As coaches, we believe strongly that wrestling offers many valuable opportunities for you to develop physically, mentally, and morally. Our goal is not only to make you a better wrestler, but a better person.
Physically – Wrestling is a very demanding sport that requires endurance, flexibility, and strength. You can expect to experience some pain early in the season as your body adapts to the demands of wrestling. However, as the season continues, you will see your hard work pay off as your body becomes stronger.
Mentally – Your experiences in wrestling will teach you many of life’s important lessons. Things such as accepting responsibility for your actions, overcoming adversity, experiencing the rewards of hard work and commitment, and dealing with the pain of defeat are all part of maturing mentally. As we work through these emotions throughout the season, you will see yourself gain the confidence and courage necessary to be successful both on and off of the mat.
Morally – We expect you to be a gentleman at all times by displaying strong moral characteristics such as honesty, respect, and integrity. No matter how competitive we are on the mat, we should always support and encourage each other. Wrestling is unique in that it is both an individual and team sport. When you are on the mat facing an opponent, you are alone in the spotlight. However, to be successful, each wrestler needs the skills and support of his teammates. That means being a good wrestling partner at practice and cheering on teammates at the meets.
Practices will begin January 7 the first Monday of January. We will practice 3 times per week Monday,
Tuesday and Thursday starting at 5:45 –7:00 PM practices will be held this year at Bishop Dwenger High School in the Wrestling room enter at door 2. We have several dual meets with local junior highs. In addition, you can choose to travel with the team to selected weekend tournaments coordinated by the Indiana State Wrestling Association. Practices and meets will continue until March and feed into the BD Wrestling Club.
